Bargarh, Sept 24: A former senior clerk of the Tahasil Office at Bhatli has been sent to jail after a Vigilance court in Bargarh sentenced him to four years of rigorous imprisonment in a ₹5,000 bribery case.
Gobardhan Meher was convicted for demanding and accepting the bribe from a farmer in connection with the release of a cheque towards drought compensation.
Gobardhan Meher, who was serving as a Senior Clerk at the Tahasil Office, Bhatli, and was later posted as Senior Clerk in the Revenue Section of the Bargarh Collectorate, was convicted today by the Special Vigilance Judge, Bargarh.
According to the Vigilance, Meher had demanded and accepted a ₹5,000 bribe from a farmer for releasing a cheque in the farmer's favour towards drought compensation.
The case was registered under Section 13(2) read with Section 13(1)(d) and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. Following the trial, the Vigilance court found Meher guilty and sentenced him to four years of rigorous imprisonment, besides imposing a fine.
Following the court's order, Meher was sent to jail custody to serve his four-year sentence.
The Vigilance Department said that it will move the competent authority for dismissal of Gobardhan Meher from government service following his conviction.
