Dhaka, June 25: Former Chief Election Commissioner of Bangladesh, Kazi Habibul Awal, was arrested on Wednesday in Dhaka, marking the second high-profile arrest of a former election official within a week.
According to Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Talebur Rahman, Awal was detained by the Detective Branch around 2 PM in the Mogbazar area of the capital.
His arrest follows that of his predecessor, K M Nurul Huda, who was taken into custody on Sunday night over allegations of electoral manipulation during the tenure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Huda was reportedly assaulted by a mob shortly before his arrest.
