Proper planning crucial to protect jobs and economy

Senior BJD MLA Pratap Keshari Deb has raised significant concerns regarding the rapid rollout of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in India, urging the central government to proceed with caution. Speaking on Wednesday, Deb emphasized that while AI is vital for establishing India as a global economic player, the potential for misuse requires immediate attention and strict regulation.

Deb highlighted that the push for AI development must be balanced with robust safety measures. He pointed out that without stringent rules, the technology could be exploited by bad actors, creating new security challenges. His comments come at a time when the India AI Impact Summit 2026 is underway in New Delhi, gathering global experts to discuss the future of the technology.

A major concern for the Biju Janata Dal leader is the impact of automation on employment. He warned that introducing AI across all sectors without a comprehensive strategy could lead to widespread job losses. According to Deb, such a move would ultimately harm the country's economic stability rather than help it. He suggested limiting AI integration to scientific research and specific processes where it accelerates growth, rather than a blanket implementation.

The MLA also critiqued the competitive nature of AI adoption among Indian states. He described the current situation as a "mad race," where states like Odisha are rushing to mimic developments in Delhi without evaluating their own readiness or necessities. Deb advised against joining this race blindly, stressing the need for a careful assessment of local requirements before committing to large-scale technological shifts.

Deb’s statements add a crucial perspective to the ongoing national conversation about AI governance, coinciding with the global discussions currently happening at Bharat Mandapam.
