Balasore, July 15: The girl student who set herself on fire outside the principal’s chamber at Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore on July 12 passed away late on Monday night. She had suffered severe burn injuries covering 90–95% of her body.

According to doctors at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, the burns caused serious internal damage to her kidneys and lungs, which led to her death.

The medical team at AIIMS Bhubaneswar tried their best to save her.

She was treated in the Burns ICU with advanced care, including kidney support treatment. Unfortunately, she could not recover and was declared clinically dead at 11:46 PM on July 14.

Doctors said the student's lungs and kidneys were badly affected due to the fire. The heat and smoke had also damaged her breathing system and other organs, making her condition worse and increasing the risk of infection and organ failure.

Reports suggest that the student had been facing repeated harassment from the Head of the Department (HOD). She had earlier complained about his behaviour and demanded action, but reportedly felt ignored and helpless.

On the day of the incident, she sat down on the college campus in protest and set herself on fire. She was first taken to the Balasore District Headquarters Hospital and then shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar as her condition became critical.

Following the incident, the HOD, Sameer Kumar Sahoo, was taken into police custody for questioning. Investigations are underway.
