Athgarh, Jul 17: A flood-like situation has emerged in Athagarh of Odisha’s Cuttack district following incessant rainfall triggered by a low-pressure system, disrupting normal life and cutting off several villages.
The Sapua Bridge near Naduapada on the Old Cuttack–Sambalpur Road has been submerged under nearly two feet of water, forcing authorities to suspend vehicular movement on the busy route.
Athagarh police personnel have been deployed at the spot and are closely monitoring the situation. Traffic has been completely restricted to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of commuters.
Several stretches of the Old Cuttack–Sambalpur Road remain submerged under two to three feet of floodwater, severing connectivity to nearly 10 villages, including Karakamal in Kulailo Panchayat; Ichhapur, Gudupada, and Muktadeipur in Ichhapur Panchayat; Haripur in Mahakalabasta Panchayat; Dahisara; and parts of Samsarpur Panchayat.
Floodwaters have entered residential areas in many villages, forcing several families to leave their homes and take shelter in school buildings and other safer locations.
The local administration has launched rescue and relief operations to evacuate residents from the affected areas and provide necessary assistance.
On Thursday night, the Athagarh MLA visited the flood-hit villages by riding a tractor through the waterlogged areas. During the visit, he interacted with affected residents, assessed the situation, and assured them of all possible support and relief measures.
