Veteran politician Khaleda Zia passes away during intensive medical treatment

Bangladesh's political landscape witnessed a significant shift early Tuesday morning with the passing of Begum Khaleda Zia. The former Prime Minister and long-standing chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) died at the age of 80. She breathed her last at approximately 6:00 AM while receiving treatment at Apollo Hospital in Dhaka.

Medical professionals and party officials, including BNP ICT Affairs Secretary A.K.M. Wahiduzzaman, confirmed the news. Her health had been a major concern for several weeks, with her condition reaching a critical state overnight. Senior party member Dr. Zahid Hossain had previously alerted the public that she was navigating an extremely fragile phase of her illness shortly before the Khaleda Zia death announcement.

Family members, including her son Tarique Rahman, Zubaida Rahman, and Zaima Rahman, were present at the hospital late Monday night. They reportedly left the facility shortly before her condition took a final turn. Khaleda Zia had been battling chronic health complications for years and was hospitalized on November 26 for what would become her final medical stay.

As the widow of former President Ziaur Rahman, Khaleda Zia was a formidable force in South Asian politics. Her career spanned over three decades, during which she served as Prime Minister three times. She was known for leading the BNP through various political transitions, election cycles, and mass movements. Her influence remained a cornerstone of Bangladeshi governance, though she was often viewed as a polarizing figure by her critics and supporters alike.

News of her demise has prompted a wave of condolences from across the political spectrum. Colleagues and rivals are recognizing her extensive contributions to the country's democratic framework. While the nation mourns, the BNP is expected to release details regarding her final rites and funeral services shortly. This event marks the end of a pivotal chapter in the history of neighboring Bangladesh.
