Cuttack, July 3: After the detection of HIV-positive inmates at Jharpada Special Jail, five prisoners have now tested positive for HIV at Choudwar Circle Jail in Odisha.
According to jail authorities, two of the HIV-positive inmates are serving their sentences, while the remaining three are undertrial prisoners. Earlier, eight inmates were found to be HIV-positive at Jharpada Special Jail, raising concerns over inmate health management in correctional facilities.
Officials said the infected inmates at Choudwar Circle Jail have been shifted to a dedicated medical ward within the prison, where they are receiving appropriate treatment and care. Their health is being monitored regularly by the jail's medical team, which includes one doctor and two pharmacists.
Choudwar Circle Jail Superintendent Sujit Raul said that every inmate admitted to the prison undergoes a comprehensive medical examination as part of the mandatory intake process. Based on the results of these health screenings, prisoners are assigned to appropriate wards to ensure proper medical care and prevent health risks within the prison.
The jail administration has assured that all necessary medical protocols are being followed for the treatment and monitoring of the HIV-positive inmates.
