Bhubaneswar, Oct 18: Weather models predict a severe winter in northern India this year due to the return of La Niña conditions, according to private agency Skymet. However, forecasts remain conflicting, with global and regional models suggesting above-normal temperatures in many areas.

In Odisha, senior agrometeorologist Prof. Surendranath Pasupalak predicts a mild and delayed winter, especially along the coastal belt, while interior regions may see normal cold. He attributes this to moist northeast winds, increased cloud cover, and frequent western disturbances, which may hinder cold waves from the north.

The La Nina phase, which began in October, is expected to continue through February, though its impact may vary regionally. Western Himalayan states and adjoining areas may witness sharper temperature drops in November and December.
