Bhubaneswar, June 26: A 66-year-old man was arrested after four years in connection with death of his daughter-in-law over dowry four years ago, said police on Wednesday.
The arrested, identified as Kumar Palei (66), was an accused in the death of his daughter-in-law and was absconded for the last four years, said ShreeLingaraj Police.
According to police, Palei is a resident of Chnadi Mangala village under Badamba police limits in Cuttack district. His son was staying under ShreeLingaraj Police Station and had married Rajalaxmi Behera of the area in 2019 as per Hindu ritual. Rajalaxmi’s family had given the dowry as per Palei’s demand during marriage.
However, Palei and his son used to pressurise Rajalaxmi to bring more Rs 2 lakh after marriage and started torturing her.
On July 1, 2020, Kumar Palei informed Rajalaxmi’s mother Manjhubala about suicide of her daughter over phone.
Manjubala filed a dowry death case at ShreeLingaraj Police Station on July 2. Police registered a dowry related murder case and arrested Rajalaxmi’s husband on July 4. However, Kumar was absconded after the police complaint. He was arrested on Monday night and forwarded to jail on Tuesday after his bail plea got rejected by a local court.
