Global experts back coal gasification for achieving Indian self-reliance

Global experts recently gathered in Bhubaneswar to map out strategies for turning high-ash Indian coal into a driver of national self-reliance. Industry leaders firmly argued that coal gasification makes strong business sense for reducing dependence on foreign energy and chemical imports. Organised by the Coal Gasifiers Association of India (CGAI), this international conference drew top executives from Coal India, Mahanadi Coalfields, Southeastern Coalfields, GAIL, NTPC, and Jindal Steel.

Delegations from Sri Lanka and technical experts from Canada also joined the event, bringing valuable global perspectives. This gathering holds special significance for Odisha, a state rich in mineral resources that has historically served as a central energy hub for the nation.

Exploring Modern Tech Solutions

More than 25 specialist speakers shared their research on handling high-ash coal during the conference titled "Challenges, Opportunities and New Technologies in Coal Gasification." They presented technical papers showing how domestic production of strategic chemicals can safely replace costly foreign imports. Financial help from the Ministry of Coal, provided through the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme, played a central role in these business discussions. Leaders from NTPC and Jindal Steel detailed current projects that directly support the goal of an Atmanirbhar Bharat by improving efficiency and green practices.

Field Visit to Angul Facilities

Delegates received a practical look at these technologies when the CGAI hosted an official tour of the Jindal Steel flagship plant in Angul. Participants closely observed the unique Coal Gasification-based Direct Reduced Iron (CGP-DRI) facility. This specific site holds the distinction of being the first CGP-DRI unit in India built specifically for steelmaking.

Visitors studied the modern production methods and admired the largest blast furnace currently operating in the country. Key figures attending the event included CGAI President Sanjay Singh, General Secretary Dr. A.K. Balyan, gasification expert Kapil Dhagat, and GAIL Director R.K. Singhal. Former Chief Secretary of Odisha, Asit Tripathy, attended the successful conference as the Chief Guest.
