Bhadrak, June 25: A young farmer in Odisha's Bhadrak district has successfully cultivated the world's most expensive mango variety, 'Miyazaki,' known for its premium quality and high market value. Each kilogram of Miyazaki mangoes can fetch between ₹2.5 lakh to ₹3 lakh in the international market, with the youth reportedly selling them at ₹1.9 lakh per kilogram.
Miyazaki mangoes are renowned for their rich antioxidant content, including beta-carotene and folic acid, which are beneficial for vision improvement and purportedly aid in managing breast cancer.
The cultivation of Miyazaki mangoes in Bhadrak district highlights not only the agricultural innovation in Odisha but also the potential for high-value crop diversification in the region.
Why Miyazaki Mangoes are high in prices?
Japanese Origin: Miyazaki mangoes originate from Miyazaki city in Japan and are highly sought after globally for their distinctive flavor and medicinal properties.
High Sugar Content: Compared to other mango varieties, Miyazaki mangoes contain 15% or more sugar, contributing to their exceptional sweetness.
Nutritional Benefits: Besides antioxidants, these mangoes are packed with beta-carotene and folic acid, making them particularly beneficial for eye health and vision.
Cultural Significance: In Japan, Miyazaki mangoes are revered and referred to as 'Eggs of the Sun' (Taiyo-no-Tamago), denoting their premium quality and rigorous quality standards.
Challenges in Cultivation: While popular and lucrative, assistant director of horticulture in Kalahandi, Tankadhar Kalo, emphasized the need for further research and development to effectively cultivate and manage such exotic varieties in India.
