Sanaa [Yemen], July 15: The scheduled execution of Nimisha Priya, a 37-year-old nurse from Kerala, has been postponed by Yemeni authorities just a day before it was set to take place on July 16, sources told ANI on Tuesday.
The decision comes after sustained diplomatic efforts by the Government of India.
According to the sources, the postponement allows additional time for Priya’s family to explore a possible resolution with the victim's family. Indian officials have reportedly maintained ongoing communication with Yemeni prison authorities and the prosecutor’s office, working sensitively to secure the delay.
“In the case of Ms. Nimisha Priya, it has been learnt that the local authorities in Yemen have postponed the execution scheduled for July 16, 2025,” the sources confirmed.
They added, “The Government of India, which has been extending all possible support since the outset, intensified efforts in recent days to obtain more time for her family to pursue a mutually acceptable agreement with the other party.”
Priya was convicted by a Yemeni trial court of murdering a Yemeni national, a verdict that was upheld by the country’s Supreme Judicial Council in November 2023. She had been facing imminent execution.
On Monday, India’s Attorney General informed the Supreme Court that the central government is actively working to support Priya and exhaust all possible diplomatic channels.
