Bhubaneswar, February 9: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Member of Parliament, Dr. Sasmit Patra, made a compelling plea in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, urging the Union Government to prioritize the holistic development of Southern Odisha.

During the Zero Hour, Dr. Patra highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive development in the districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Nabarangpur, and Malkangiri, emphasizing that the region’s growth hinges on robust infrastructure improvements. His key focus was on enhancing the region’s railways, national highways, and airports, which he described as the three pillars of progress for the area.

The BJD MP urged the central government to expedite the execution of railway and national highway projects across these districts. He also called for the immediate commissioning of the Rangeilunda (Berhampur) Airport, a critical facility for the region. While acknowledging the operation of airports in Jeypore and Malkangiri, Dr. Patra pointed out their unreliable schedules and frequent cancellations, stressing the need for consistent and dependable air connectivity.

In addition, Dr. Patra proposed the exploration of smaller airstrips in other districts of Southern Odisha, citing the region’s untapped eco-tourism potential. He emphasized that fostering growth in Southern Odisha is integral to the overall progress of the state, urging the Union Government to fast-track these vital infrastructure projects without further delays.

Dr. Sasmit Patra’s call for focused attention on Southern Odisha’s development underscores the region’s critical role in the state’s broader growth trajectory.
