Winter Chill Intensifies Across Odisha: Dense Fog and Low Temperatures Grip the State

Winter has firmly set in across Odisha, bringing a significant drop in night temperatures and blanketing several districts in dense fog. According to the latest data released by the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, dry weather is currently prevailing across the state, but the chill is palpable, particularly in the interior and western regions.

Plummeting Temperatures

The cold wave is most severe in the plains of Odisha, where Jharsuguda emerged as the coldest urban centre, recording a shivering lowest minimum temperature of 7.2°C. However, the hill stations are facing even harsher conditions, with Similiguda recording the state's lowest temperature overall at 5.7°C.

The twin cities are not exempt from the wintry breeze. The capital city, Bhubaneswar, recorded a minimum night temperature of 13.6°C, while Cuttack settled slightly lower at 13.2°C.

Interestingly, Jharsuguda and Paralakhemundi also shared the spot for the highest maximum temperature in the state, reaching 30.0°C, showing a sharp contrast between day and night conditions.

Fog Updates and Warnings

Visibility has taken a hit in several areas due to foggy conditions. The weather department reported Dense Fog (visibility between 50m and 200m) in:

  • Rourkela
  • Phulbani
  • Paradip
  • Hirakud

Meanwhile, Moderate Fog (visibility between 200m and 500m) was observed in Koraput, Sonepur, Jharsuguda, and Bhawanipatna.

The Forecast: What Lies Ahead?

For those hoping for a respite from the cold, the outlook suggests the chill is here to stay. The IMD forecast indicates that there will be no large change in the minimum temperature (night temperature) over the districts of Odisha during the next 7 days.

Furthermore, a specific Fog Forecast has been issued valid for the next two days (up to the morning of December 19, 2025). Shallow to moderate fog is very likely to occur during the early morning hours in isolated pockets of the following districts:

  • Sundargarh
  • Kandhamal
  • Sambalpur
  • Kalahandi
  • Sonepur
  • Koraput
  • Jharsuguda

Commuters in these regions are advised to exercise caution during early morning travel due to reduced visibility.
