127 million eligible voters decide nation's future today

Voting has commenced for the Bangladesh 13th Parliamentary Elections, signaling a massive shift in the nation’s political landscape. This election is particularly significant as it marks the end of the long-standing 'Battle of Begums' era. With former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia passing away and Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League currently banned from contesting, the field is wide open for new leadership dynamics.

Polling stations opened at 7:30 am local time and will accept ballots until 4:30 pm. Officials have confirmed that counting is scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm today, with final results expected to be announced by the Election Commission on the morning of February 13.

Demographics play a crucial role in this cycle. As the world’s eighth most populous nation, Bangladesh has nearly 127 million eligible voters. A staggering 50 percent of the electorate falls between the ages of 18 and 37, a demographic that includes 4.57 million first-time voters eager to shape their future.

While the Election Commission suspended the registration of the Awami League last year, competition remains fierce. Out of 59 registered entities, 51 parties are fielding candidates. The major contenders include the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami, the National Citizen Party (NCP), and the Jatiya Party factions. In total, 1,981 candidates, including 249 independents, are vying for seats in the parliament.

Voters are not just selecting their next government; they are also participating in a crucial referendum. Ballots include a vote on the National Charter 2025, a foundational document drafted by the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus to guide future governance. Key issues driving voter sentiment include rising inflation, corruption, and the urgent need for economic development and employment opportunities.

Security remains a top priority. Home Adviser Lieutenant General Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd) has issued stern warnings against electoral malpractice. Authorities are on high alert to prevent ballot box snatching or fraudulent voting, ensuring the Bangladesh 13th Parliamentary Elections remain free and fair.
