Cuttack, June 12: A 70- year old woman of Khalimati village under Badamba police limits was trampled to death by a wild elephant on Wednesday morning.
The deceased woman has been identified as Gayadhar Dehuri.
The incident occurred while the elderly woman had gone to Tanguri Reserve Forest to collect wood. While returning home, she encountered an elephant which trampled Dehuri and killed on the spot. As she delayed returning home, her family members made a frantic search. However, they spotted the mutilated body of Gayadhar in the jungle.
Being informed, forest department officials reached the spot, seized the body and sent it for autopsy to Badamba Community Health Centre.
Incidents like these have become commonplace in certain regions of the state, where encounters with elephants have tragically claimed numerous lives.
Three days ago, a 74-year-old woman named Asha Dehury from Aanlabareni village, under the Handapa police limits, was fatally trampled by a wild elephant. The tragic incident took place as Asha ventured into the nearby forest to gather mangoes with three other women. While the elephant attacked and killed Asha on the spot, the other women were fortunate enough to escape the scene.
