Keonjhar, Nov 20: An elephant died of electrocution in a forest in Odisha's Keonjhar district on Sunday. The carcass of the elephant calf was found near Akula Mundasahi.
The elephant died after coming in contact with a live wire that was laid around a paddy field.
"Prima facie, it is an electrocution death. The jumbo came in contact with a stay wire, supporting the electric pole, which was charged, causing the death of tusker," Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Keonjhar Division H D Dhanraj told.
The Forest Department has detained three villagers in this connection.
“A herd of 12 elephants was found roaming in Bimala Forest Section in last few days. The tusker might have come in contact with the solar fence in between 8 pm and 10 pm last night. We have initiated a probe into the incident. Stern action will be initiated against those found guilty in the incident,” added the DFO.
Worth mentioning, another tusker died of electrocution near Bhadimara Juang Sahi under Telkoi Forest Range in Keonjhar on November 10.
