Eid-ul-Adha, popularly known as Bakrid, is one of the holiest festivals celebrated by Muslims around the world. Also referred to as Eid-al-Adha, Eid-ul-Zuha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, the festival symbolises devotion, gratitude, and compassion.
Observed on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar, Eid-ul-Adha also marks the completion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca. In India, the festival will be celebrated on May 28, 2026. It falls nearly two months and nine days after Eid-ul-Fitr.
The occasion commemorates the unwavering faith of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham). According to Islamic tradition, Allah tested Ibrahim’s devotion by asking him to sacrifice his son. As Ibrahim prepared to obey the divine command, Allah replaced his son with a ram, rewarding his faith and obedience. The story continues to inspire values of sacrifice, humility, and kindness.
Families and communities come together during Bakrid to offer prayers, perform qurbani (sacrifice), and share meals with relatives, friends, and those in need. The festival also serves as a reminder of generosity and social responsibility.
