Bhubaneswar, September 16: The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has achieved a major milestone in freight transportation by crossing the 100 million tonnes (MT) mark in freight unloading during the current financial year 2026-27, thereby becoming the first Railway Zone in the country, said an official release on Wednesday.
It reached the target 17 days earlier than the corresponding period of the previous financial year
According to an ECoR statement, during the period, ECoR has recorded 9.8% growth in freight release tonnage over the corresponding period of FY 2025–26. The growth has been supported by improved wagon handling and quicker release of freight rakes, particularly BOXN and BOBRN wagons.
The release of BOXN wagons has increased by 7.3%, while BOBRN wagon release has registered a growth of 9.8% compared to the corresponding period of the previous financial year. The improved wagon release reflects better turnaround and enhanced efficiency in freight operations.
ECoR has also registered 3.9% growth in freight loading, while freight earnings have grown by 3.2% during the corresponding period. These gains reflect the Zone’s continued focus on increasing freight throughput and making optimum use of available railway assets.
“The freight transportation through ECoR caters to the requirements of major industries and businesses, supporting the movement of essential commodities and raw materials. The improved unloading and wagon release performance will further facilitate faster, smoother and more cost effective transportation, strengthening the role of railways in the logistics chain,” it stated.
The achievement underlines ECoR’s sustained efforts to improve freight handling, wagon turnaround and asset utilisation, thereby facilitating faster and more efficient movement of goods across its network, it asserted.
