Dhenkanal, Jan 27: A vegetable vendor was critically injured after being chased and attacked by a group of miscreants in Dhenkanal town on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred at the daily vegetable market near Bajichowk, reportedly due to a previous dispute.

The injured vendor has been identified as Patu alias Dipun Pradhan of Ragadi Sahi area. He sustained serious injuries after being attacked with swords and sharp weapons. He was initially admitted to the Dhenkanal District Headquarters Hospital and later referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced treatment, where his condition remains critical.

According to eyewitnesses, around 5:30 pm, five youths arrived at the market on three motorcycles, armed with pistols, swords, sharp weapons, and sticks, and launched a sudden attack on the vendor while he was at his shop. Dipun Pradhan attempted to flee to save his life but was chased by the attackers. As local residents gathered at the scene, the assailants fled on two motorcycles, leaving one vehicle behind.

Upon receiving information, Town Police reached the spot, seized the abandoned motorcycle, and initiated an investigation. Police sources suspect the attackers to be residents of the Mallar Sahi area under Laxmibazar in Dhenkanal town. Authorities believe the attack may be linked to long-standing rivalry and previous clashes between the Mallar Sahi and Ragadi Sahi areas.

Further investigation is underway.
