New Delhi, June 3: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a press conference scheduled for today, June 3, at 12:30 pm, just one day before the commencement of vote counting for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This move marks a significant departure in India's electoral history, as it appears to be the first time the ECI has called for such a conference after an election.
According to the media invitation issued by the ECI, titled "Press Conference by Election Commission of India on General Elections 2024," the event aims to provide insights and updates on the recently concluded electoral process. Notably, the tradition of deputy election commissioners holding media briefings after each phase of polls, which was prevalent until the 2019 parliamentary elections, has been discontinued.
The extensive seven-phase polling for the Lok Sabha elections commenced on April 19 and concluded on Saturday, June 1. The counting of votes is scheduled to commence at 8 am on Tuesday, June 4, and will continue until all ballots from the 543 constituencies are tabulated by the Election Commission.
