Bhubaneswar, Dec 11: A dreaded criminal was nabbed after a brief encounter with the police in Brahmagiri area of Odisha’s Puri town today.
The criminal has been identified as Santosh Barik alias Santu, son of Charan Barik, of Palanka village under Brahmagiri police limits.
He sustained bullet injuries on his right leg and has been admitted to the Puri District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) for treatment.
As per reports, Santu had opened fire at a woman identified as Jhili Sahoo at Chandiput near Brahmagiri on November 29 over some issue. She sustained bullet injuries on her hand in the attack.
Following a complaint in this regard, police swung into action and Puri district Superintendent of Police (SP) Kanwar Vishal Singh formed a special team under Puri Sadar SDPO to nab the accused.
The police team got a tip-off regarding Santu’s presence at Girala forest near Puri town this evening. Acting on it, a police team led by Puri Sadar IIC Balhabagrahi Pradhan rushed to the spot to apprehend him.
Upon seeing the police, Santu opened fire at them in a bid to escape. However, he sustained bullet injuries on his right leg in the retaliatory fire by the cops and was later apprehended.
The cops also seized a gun and two bullets from his possession.
During the encounter, Brahmagiri police SUB-Inspector Narayan Pradhan and Assistant Sub-Inspector Sanjeet Kumar Kanhar sustained minor injuries.
