Malkangiri, Nov 21: Security forces averted a major tragedy after detecting and defusing a 10-kg improvised explosive device (IED) planted by Maoists in the Bhairamgarh forests of Bijapur district, located along the Malkangiri–Chhattisgarh border. The explosive was allegedly planted to target security personnel moving through the area.

During a routine combing operation, security teams spotted the landmine and recovered it with utmost caution. The bomb disposal squad later neutralised the device safely.

Officials said the blast visuals revealed the intensity and destructive potential of the explosive. Following the death of top Maoist leader Hidma, Maoist cadres had reportedly planned a major attack to inflict damage on security forces. However, the timely intervention of the forces successfully thwarted the plot.

A massive search operation has since been launched in the region to track the Maoists responsible for planting the IED.
