Bhubaneswar, Nov 11: The Commissionerate Police has imposed restrictions on the bursting of firecrackers in the capital city during the Diwali celebration on Sunday.
Denizens of Bhubaneswar city are allowed to burst permissible varieties of crackers only up to 10 pm on the eve of Diwali, Police Commissioner Saumendra Priyadarshi on Friday.
Action will be taken against bursting crackers with noise levels of more than 125 decibels and illegal firecrackers.
A special team has been formed to conduct raids to check the bursting of illegal firecrackers in the city.
“As per the guidelines, denizens can burst firecrackers up to 10 pm on Diwali. They can’t create noise by bursting crackers beyond the time limit", said Priyadarshi.
He also advised minors to burst crackers in presence of guardians and stressed on the use of green crackers to control air and noise pollution.
Notably, restrictions have been imposed on locally-made firecrackers following the Supreme Court direction. Now only PESO (Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organization) approved green crackers are allowed for sale in Odisha.
Crackers which make sound less than 125 decibel are allowed for sale.
Dangerous chemicals like Barium nitrate, lithium antimony and arsenic are used in making handmade crackers. These crackers release poisonous gas to the environment. Hence, these crackers have been banned in Odisha since November 2021, said State Pollution Board senior scientist Niranjan Mallick.
China crackers and snake crackers release more smoke and pollute the air quality. These crackers have been banned this time, he added.
