Bhubaneswar, Feb 20: Indian Railways has approved the final location survey for establishing a new coach maintenance facility at Golanthara, close to Berhampur station in Odisha's Ganjam district. This facility is expected to play a significant role in enhancing railway operations in the region.

The facility, once operational, will lead to several trains starting and ending their journeys at Berhampur station, significantly boosting its role in regional rail operations. The Railway Board's recent approval is a step towards improving operational capacity in southern Odisha.

Located around 10 km from Berhampur, the new facility will function as a satellite coaching depot. It is expected to alleviate congestion at Berhampur and create additional space for smoother train movements, according to local residents.

The establishment of this depot will also spur development around the Golanthara station area. The project is anticipated to ease congestion at the Berhampur yard, improve operational flexibility, and increase the number of originating and terminating trains in the future. Additionally, it will enhance maintenance standards, ensure better passenger safety, improve punctuality, and reduce unnecessary empty rake movements.
