Bhubaneswar, February 8: Two members of an Odisha-based family were killed and five others were critically injured after their car hit a stationary van on the National Highway from the rear near Nandigram of Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh.

The mishap occurred while the family was travelling to seek medical treatment in Srikakulam district on Sunday.

The deceased have been identified as V Mohini and V Dalaya. Both succumbed to the injuries on the spot.

According to sources, the victim family belongs to Patisunapur village under Chikiti block of Ganjam district. They were taking a paralytic patient for medical treatment when the mishap occurred on the National Highway early this morning.

Sources said that the crash happened when a speeding car collided with a parked van on the roadside. The front of the car was completely damaged.

Local residents alerted the police, who arrived promptly and launched rescue operations and rushed the injured persons to the hospital nearby.

The five injured were rushed to Tekkali Government Hospital, where doctors said some of their conditions are critical. They are being shifted to other hospitals for further treatment.

Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expresses grief over the death of the two people in road mishap in the neighbouring State and announced Rs 4 lakh compensation each to the next of the kin of the deceased.
