Malkangiri, Dec 23: In a major boost to connectivity, direct flight services are most likely to be introduced between Odisha’s tribal-dominated Malkangiri district and Visakhapatnam International Airport soon. If all goes as planned, the flight services are expected to commence in 2025.
Currently, pre-operational arrangements are underway to launch a nine-seater jet from IndiaOne, as Malkangiri airport is not yet fully operational for commercial flights or regular passenger flights. Currently, the airport is only handling non-scheduled flights, such as those for ministers or emergency services.
“Yes, we have received a flight proposal from operator IndiaOne. The service is scheduled to open in 2025 if everything is approved,” The Hindu quoted Visakhapatnam Airport Director S. Raja Reddy.
At present, IndiaOne operates a nine-seater jet between Visakhapatnam and Jaipur (Odisha) and it has been experiencing good occupancy.
Notably, introducing flight services to Malkangiri would be a significant boost for Odisha as it will provide enhanced connectivity along with serving as a vital resource for logistical support in emergencies. Given that Malkangiri is a Naxal-affected area, these flights could be crucial for the transportation of government authorities, police, and medical supplies during critical situations.
