Freezing cold arrives as Chillai Kalan starts in Kashmir Valley

Jammu and Kashmir has officially entered its harshest winter phase, known as Chillai Kalan. Starting on December 21, this 40-day stretch of extreme cold has made a grand entrance with a mix of fresh snowfall and seasonal rain across the valley. Residents and visitors are bracing for a period that typically lasts until January 31, characterized by bone-chilling temperatures and a landscape transformed into a white wonderland.

The onset of Chillai Kalan was most visible in Sonamarg, located in the Ganderbal district. The popular tourist destination was blanketed in a thick layer of white, covering buildings, roads, and vehicles. While tourists rejoiced at the "winter wonderland" scenery, the region also experienced its first significant snowfall of the season on Sunday. Meanwhile, areas like Anantnag and the capital city, Srinagar, received rainfall, signaling a sharp shift in the local climate.

Daily life in Srinagar is currently defined by a persistent cold wave and thick morning fog. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), temperatures in the city plummeted by 4°C compared to the previous day, reaching a freezing low of -4°C. This intense drop often leads to the freezing of water bodies, including parts of the iconic Dal Lake. Despite the dense fog and biting cold, the spirit of the city remains resilient. Shikara rides and sightseeing activities near Dal Lake continue, offering a misty, picturesque atmosphere that attracts photographers and travelers alike.

Historically, this 40-day window is the most challenging time for the region, often disrupting transport and daily chores due to frozen pipes and blocked roads. Local authorities have issued advisories for both residents and visitors to monitor weather updates closely and take necessary precautions against the sub-zero conditions. As the valley prepares for more snow, the arrival of Chillai Kalan serves as a reminder of the raw, breathtaking power of nature in Northern India.
