Bhubaneswar/New Delhi, June 26: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan turned 57 on Friday, marking another milestone in a political career spanning over four decades. From a student leader in Odisha to one of the BJP's most trusted national faces, Pradhan's journey reflects a steady rise through the party ranks and key roles in the Union government.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the birthday greetings, praising Pradhan's contribution to the successful implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP). In a post on X, the Prime Minister wished him a long and healthy life, stating that his efforts are helping transform India into a global centre for knowledge, education, and innovation.
Born on June 26, 1969, in Handidhua near Talcher in Odisha's Angul district, Pradhan entered public life at an early age. His political journey began with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in 1983. Two years later, he was elected president of the Talcher College Students' Union, showcasing the leadership qualities that would shape his future in national politics.
His electoral breakthrough came in 2000, when he was elected MLA from the Pallahara Assembly constituency. In 2004, he entered Parliament after winning the Deogarh Lok Sabha seat. During the same period, he served as National President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), emerging as one of the BJP's prominent young leaders.
Pradhan's organisational capabilities earned him greater responsibilities within the BJP. As the party's national general secretary and election strategist, he successfully handled crucial assignments in states such as Bihar, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, and Karnataka, becoming one of the party's dependable national organisers.
In 2012, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Bihar. Following the BJP's victory in 2014, he joined Prime Minister Modi's first Cabinet as Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas. During his tenure, he spearheaded several landmark initiatives, including the expansion of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, which provided clean cooking fuel to millions of households across the country.
He later held additional charge of the Steel Ministry before taking over as Union Education Minister in 2021. Since then, Pradhan has focused on implementing the National Education Policy, promoting skill development, digital learning, multidisciplinary education, and greater integration between education and employability.
The 2024 Lok Sabha elections marked another significant chapter in his career as he won the Sambalpur parliamentary constituency, strengthening his political base in Odisha while continuing to play a key role in the Union government.
At 57, Dharmendra Pradhan remains one of the BJP's most influential leaders from Odisha, balancing national policymaking with organisational responsibilities. As India pushes ahead with ambitious education reforms under the NEP, Pradhan continues to occupy a pivotal position in shaping the country's academic and human resource landscape.
