Berhampur, Jan. 21: In a landmark achievement in south Odisha’s healthcare sector, doctors at Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital – III at Sitalapalli here have successfully performed a highly complex neurosurgical procedure to remove a life-threatening brain tumor from a 50-year-old woman.

It is for the first time such an advanced neurosurgical technique has been carried out in the south Odisha city significantly strengthening the region’s super-specialty care capabilities.

The patient, Hiramani Sahoo, was admitted with complaints of severe headache and sudden weakness of the left upper and lower limbs. Considering the seriousness of the neurological symptoms, doctors immediately advised an MRI scan. Imaging revealed a large intraventricular brain tumor on the right side of the brain—a rare and technically demanding condition due to the tumor’s deep location within the brain’s ventricular (fluid-filled) system where surgical access carries a high risk of damage to vital brain structures.

Despite the complexity, the neurosurgery team successfully performed a near-total excision of the tumor using advanced technology including a high-precision neurosurgical microscope and CUSA (Cavitron Ultrasonic Surgical Aspirator). The CUSA technology enables ultrasonic fragmentation and selective aspiration of tumor tissue while preserving surrounding healthy brain matter, nerves and blood vessels—making it crucial for such delicate procedures.

The surgery was led by Dr. Pravat Kumar Jagadev, Associate Professor of Neurosurgery, with expert neuro-anaesthesia support from Dr. Pratyush K. Mishra, along with the dedicated neurosurgical operation theatre team.

Following the procedure, hospital authorities confirmed that the patient was stable and recovering well under close medical observation.

Congratulating the entire team, Deba Prasad Dash, Director of the hospital, said that the neurosurgery department at IMS and SUM Hospital–III had been consistently achieving multiple first-of-its-kind procedures in Berhampur. He emphasized that these milestones reflected the institution’s commitment to bringing metro-level advanced healthcare closer to the people of the region.

The Director further highlighted that IMS and SUM Hospital–III now offered a comprehensive range of super-specialty services, including Neurosurgery, Neurology, Medical and Surgical Oncology, Hematology, Critical Care, Trauma Services, Dialysis, Cardiology, Orthopaedics, Gastroenterology and Urology, supported by high-end ICU and HDU facilities. The hospital also provides 24×7 emergency services, trauma care, dialysis services, and advanced critical care support, ensuring round-the-clock comprehensive medical care.

Dash said the institution remained firmly committed to delivering affordable, accessible and advanced healthcare ensuring that patients from South Odisha no longer needed to travel to distant metropolitan cities for complex and high-risk medical treatments.

This successful surgery stands as a major step forward in strengthening Berhampur’s medical infrastructure and reinforces growing public confidence in locally available super-specialty healthcare services.
