New Delhi, May 25: Veteran actor and BJP MP Hema Malini on Monday received the prestigious Padma Vibhushan on behalf of her late husband, legendary actor Dharmendra, during the Civil Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
President Droupadi Murmu presented India’s second-highest civilian honour posthumously to Dharmendra in recognition of his exceptional contribution to Indian cinema and the arts. The iconic actor passed away on November 24, 2025, at the age of 89.
The emotional ceremony witnessed heartfelt moments as Dharmendra’s daughter, Ahana Deol, became teary-eyed when her father’s name was announced. She was accompanied by her husband, Vaibhav Vohra.
Speaking after receiving the honour, Hema Malini said the recognition was a proud and emotional moment for the entire family and millions of Dharmendra’s admirers across the country.
“It makes us very happy, the entire country is happy. Had it come earlier, Dharmendra ji would have been extremely happy, and seeing him, his fans would have been even happier,” she said.
Earlier, Hema Malini had termed the honour “long overdue” and thanked the Centre for recognising Dharmendra’s immense contribution to Indian cinema.
Fondly known as Bollywood’s original ‘He-Man’, Dharmendra enjoyed a remarkable career spanning more than six decades. Celebrated for his charisma, versatility and powerful screen presence, he delivered several timeless classics, including Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke, Ayee Milan Ki Bela and Anupama.
The veteran actor had been battling health issues in the final months of his life. He was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on November 10, 2025, following a decline in his health and was later discharged for home treatment before passing away on November 24.
The Padma Awards for 2026 were announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs on the eve of Republic Day. The honours recognise distinguished contributions across various fields, including arts, literature, education, medicine, social work and public service.
