Kartika Purnima is one of the most prominent and sacred full moon days in the Hindu calendar. It falls on the last day of the Kartika month, and is also known as Tripura Purnima. This day is particularly important because it marks the special worship of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

Significance:

According to Hindu tradition, this day is significant due to the belief that on this day, Lord Shiva destroyed the three demons (Tripura) who were causing terror in different worlds.

The importance of Tripura Purnima became even more profound after the destruction of the Tripura demons, and since then, it has been celebrated as a day dedicated to Lord Shiva’s worship. The day also holds great importance because of its association with the Ganga Snan (bathing in the holy river Ganga). It is believed that taking a dip in the Ganga on Kartika Purnima cleanses one from all sins and leads to moksha (liberation).

In many traditions, it is said that the gods descend from heaven to take a dip in the Ganga on this day. Along with Ganga Snan, the day is also celebrated with the lighting of lamps, known as Deepawali or the Festival of Lights, symbolizing the victory of good over evil. It is believed that the gods light lamps on Earth to celebrate their victory over the demons.

Another major religious event on Kartika Purnima is the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the first Guru of the Sikhs. This day holds immense importance in Sikhism. Devotees from the Sikh community gather in Gurudwaras to perform Ardas (prayers), sing Kirtan, and chant the name of God.

Date, time, and rituals:

Kartika Purnima in 2025 is on November 5th, with the Purnima Tithi starting at 10:36 PM on November 4th and ending at 6:48 PM on November 5th.

The auspicious times for rituals are:

Ganga Snan: 4:52 AM to 5:44 AM

Worship Timing: 7:58 AM to 9:20 AM

Lamp lighting ceremony: 5:15 PM to 7:55 PM, coinciding with the 5:11 PM moonrise.
