Sikandar Raza delivered an unforgettable all-round masterclass, yet the Proteas successfully chased down a tricky 154-run target with five wickets in hand. They will now travel to Kolkata, gearing up to clash against New Zealand in the crucial knockout stage.
Zimbabwe relied heavily on their veteran star throughout the match. Raza blasted 73 runs off just 43 deliveries, scoring the vast majority of his team's total while he was at the crease. He smashed boundaries for fun, batting with a massive strike rate near 170. His strategy was straightforward but devastating. He cleared his front leg to dispatch full deliveries through the off-side and aggressively pulled shorter pitches into the stands. Later, he opened the bowling during the chase and grabbed three crucial wickets, dismantling the top order and leaving his opponents stumbling early.
Kwena Maphaka proved his worth during only his second appearance in this global tournament. Bowling consistently at high speeds, the 19-year-old prodigy troubled batters by moving both the new and old ball. He eventually removed the dangerous Raza with a clever cutter, finishing his four-over spell with two wickets for 21 runs. Several bench players, including George Linde and Anrich Nortje, also stepped up to perform solidly while standard bowlers like Kagiso Rabada rested ahead of the playoffs.
Chasing 154 quickly turned into a nightmare as early wickets tumbled. Quinton de Kock departed for a duck, and captain Aiden Markram saw his stumps shattered by a tricky carrom ball. Ryan Rickelton provided a brief spark with three massive sixes after surviving a nasty hit to the helmet. However, Dewald Brevis and David Miller truly stabilized the innings. Brevis slammed a quickfire 42, partnering with Miller to add 50 vital runs in just 25 balls. Despite Zimbabwe fighting back hard with late dismissals by Blessing Muzarabani and Raza, the Proteas held their nerve to cross the finish line.
