Cyclonic storm ‘Hamoon’ intensifies into severe cyclonic storm: IMD

Bhubaneswar, Oct 24: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the cyclonic storm ‘Hamoon’ intensified into a severe cyclonic storm over Northwest Bay of Bengal in the wee hours of Tuesday.

As per the Met department, the system intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and lay centered at 2:30 am of October 24 over Northwest Bay of Bengal about 210 km east-southeast of Paradip in Odisha, 270 km south-southeast of Digha in West Bengal and 350 km south-southwest of Khepupara in Bangladesh.

It moved northeastwards with a speed of 18 kmph during past 6 hours.

The weather department predicted that 'Hamoon' is likely to further intensify into an extremely severe cyclonic storm in the next six hours.

It is very likely to move nearly north-northeastwards and cross Bangladesh coast between Khepupara and Chittagong around the noon of October 25 as a Deep Depression, said the IMD.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off Odisha coast and Westcentral and North Bay of Bengal till October 25 as very rough to high sea condition is prevailing and likely to continue till October 24.

Under its influence, Odisha is likely to witness light to moderate rainfall.

Day-1: (Valid from 8:30 am of 24.10.2023 to 8:30 am of 25.10.23)

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur over Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur districts and at few places over coastal Odisha. The districts of Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj may also see moderate to light rain.

Day-2: (Valid from 8:30 am of 25.10.2023 to 8:30 am of 26.10.23

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is likely to occur at a few places over Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal and Boudh districts. Dry weather is likely to prevail over the rest of Odisha.

Day-3: (Valid from 8:30 am of 26.10.2023 to 8:30 am of 27.10.2023)

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at one or two places over Mayurbhanj, Balasore and Bhadrak districts. Dry weather is likely to prevail over the rest of Odisha.

Day-4: (Valid from 8:30 am of 27.10.2023 to 8:30 am of 28.10.2023)

Dry weather is very likely to prevail over Odisha.
