Cyclone Montha Preparedness Underway by Malkangiri Forest Department

The Malkangiri Forest Division has activated a comprehensive preparedness plan to address the potential impact of the approaching Cyclone Montha. Following a divisional-level review meeting held via video conference, officials have mobilized resources and personnel for a robust response.

DFO Sai Kiran, who chaired the meeting, confirmed the formation of 20 special teams across the division. These units are equipped with necessary safety gear and equipment to handle emergencies.

A significant focus is being placed on the Chitrakonda range, which is considered highly vulnerable. Its location on the Andhra Pradesh border, coupled with the presence of the Balimela reservoir and Sileru river, increases the risk of severe impact. Consequently, three dedicated teams have been stationed in the Swabhiman Anchal areas of Janbai, Gunthaward, and Chitrakonda.

To ensure swift and coordinated action, a 24-hour control room has been established for continuous monitoring. Furthermore, a Rapid Response Team (RRT) is stationed at the headquarters, ready for immediate deployment. A trained snake rescue team is also on standby to manage potential human-wildlife conflicts, particularly snakebite incidents.

Strict directives have been issued to all field staff. All sanctioned leave has been canceled, and personnel are required to remain at their respective headquarters to be available for duty. Managers of the Satiguda reservoir eco-park have also been ordered to stay vigilant and prioritize visitor safety.

Assistant Conservator of Forests, Priyanka Mahuka, stated that the division is working in close coordination with the district administration. She affirmed that the department is fully prepared to mitigate any effects of the cyclone.
