Bhubaneswar, May 29: At least 36 people lost their lives in the wake of heavy rains and landslides triggered by Cyclone Remal, affecting four northeastern states on Tuesday. The catastrophe brought normal life to a standstill across all eight states in the region, with road and rail networks severely impacted, officials confirmed.
The toll includes 27 fatalities in Mizoram, notably 21 in a tragic quarry collapse incident in Aizawl district. Additionally, four deaths were reported in Nagaland, three in Assam, and two in Meghalaya.
The torrential rains, accompanied by strong winds, unleashed landslides, uprooting trees and electric poles, leading to widespread disruption of power and internet services.
Due to waterlogging in the New Haflong-Jatinga Lampur section and Ditokcherra yard under the Lumding division of Northeast Frontier Railway, several trains faced cancellations, partial cancellations, and rescheduling.
In Mizoram, rescue efforts are underway following the quarry collapse, where 21 bodies have been recovered thus far. Multiple landslides in Aizawl district have left several others trapped under debris.
In Nagaland, four fatalities were reported, along with extensive property damage across various regions.
Assam witnessed three deaths and numerous injuries across different districts. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed condolences over the tragic losses.
Meghalaya mourned two casualties, alongside significant injuries and widespread property damage due to relentless rainfall. Landslides and flash floods added to the state's woes.
Tripura faced heavy rain and gusty winds, damaging hundreds of houses and displacing hundreds to relief camps.
Arunachal Pradesh braced for extreme rainfall, prompting a high alert from the India Meteorological Department. Chief Minister Pema Khandu urged residents to take necessary precautions against the impending deluge.
As the region grapples with the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, authorities continue rescue and relief efforts, emphasizing the need for preparedness and vigilance in the face of natural calamities.
