Bhubaneswar, May 26: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said that the cyclonic storm “Remal” (pronounced as “Re-Mal”) over North Bay of Bengal intensified into a severe cyclonic storm.
The cyclone center is currently experiencing maximum sustained wind speeds of 95-105 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 115 km/h.
It is very likely to continue moving nearly northward, intensify further, and cross the Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara, near southwest of Mongla (Bangladesh), by Sunday midnight as a Severe Cyclonic Storm.
The weather department reported that the maximum wind speed is likely to be around 110-120 km/h gusting to 135 km/h.
Under its influence, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Mayurbhanj and Jagatsinghpur districts are likely to experience heavy rainfall. Wind speed is likely to be around 60 to 70 km/h in south and north coastal districts, the IMD forecasted.
