Cyclone Murasu: Odisha begins evacuation, identifies 150 landslide-prone spots

Bhubaneswar, Nov 1: Odisha has stepped up its disaster preparedness as Cyclone Murasu is expected to intensify over the Bay of Bengal before crossing the south Andhra Pradesh coast on November 3.

The cyclone is likely to strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal and cross the coast between Nellore and Narsapur on Tuesday morning. Wind speeds of 100–110 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 120 kmph, are expected during landfall.

Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Rajesh Prabhakar Patil said the state government had initiated precautionary measures to deal with the possible impact of the cyclone.

Following a review meeting chaired by the Revenue Minister and the Chief Secretary, district Collectors have been directed to remain prepared. The evacuation process began on Sunday and is scheduled to be completed by Monday noon, particularly in districts likely to be affected.

The administration has also identified more than 150 landslide-prone locations in view of the possibility of heavy rainfall. District authorities have been instructed to stock adequate quantities of relief materials to ensure timely assistance to people in vulnerable areas.

Relief operations in Ganjam continue

The SRC also briefed the media on the flood situation in Ganjam district following Cyclone Arnab. He said relief materials had reached almost all affected areas, although some inaccessible locations were yet to receive supplies.

Patil said precautionary measures were being taken based on past experiences to ensure that people in vulnerable areas receive timely assistance.

Local administrations have also been instructed to monitor the prices of essential commodities and prevent any unreasonable increase during the crisis.

In view of the approaching cyclone, the concerned departments have been directed not to install hoardings in vulnerable areas.

The state government is closely monitoring the situation and has asked district administrations to remain alert as relief and restoration operations continue in areas affected by Cyclone Arnab.
