Kendrapara, July 26: A 6.3-foot-long female saltwater crocodile was rescued on Saturday from a village pond near Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha’s Kendrapara district, forest officials reported.
The reptile was first spotted by residents of Endulalapur village, who quickly alerted the Forest Department. Responding promptly, forest personnel launched a rescue operation that lasted nearly three hours and was carried out in the presence of concerned villagers.
Authorities believe the crocodile may have strayed into the pond due to rising floodwaters from nearby rivers and streams, a common occurrence during the monsoon season. The animal was safely captured and later relocated to a secure habitat.
Forest officials emphasized that such wildlife intrusions into human settlements have been increasing, particularly during flood conditions. They urged residents to remain vigilant and report any unusual wildlife sightings to ensure both public safety and animal welfare.
