Bhubaneswar, Mar 16: The Crime Branch police on Friday arrested the former IIC of Jaleswar police station Dhaneswar Sahu for his alleged involvement in brown sugar smuggling.
Sahu was allegedly in regular touch with some brown sugar peddlers during his tenure as Jaleswar police IIC in 2020. A purported audio clip of Sahu’s conversation with the drug peddlers went viral in the locality.
It was alleged that Sahu threatened one Sk Asruddin, who happens to be the brother of Sk Jamuruddin, a drug mafia, and demanded money for the release of a seized vehicle.
Sahu, brother of the drugs mafia and the concerned lawyer had earlier refuted such allegations by saying that that audio doesn’t belong to them.
Following this, the Director General of Police (DGP) suspended him from his position and initiated an inquiry into his suspected ties with the smugglers. Subsequently, Sahu was absconded after being suspended. The Crime Branch then took charge of the investigation.
On Friday, the Crime Branch apprehended Sahu from his residence in Narsinghpur, Cuttack.
