Connolly Stars as Australia Secure ODI Series Win Over India

Connolly Guides Hosts Home in Tense Adelaide Finish

Australia secured victory in the three-match ODI series against India on Thursday. They won the second match by two wickets at the Adelaide Oval. Youngster Cooper Connolly played a crucial role, guiding the hosts through a nervy final phase. His unbeaten half-century ensured Australia chased down India's target of 265 with 22 balls remaining. The win came despite a late flurry of wickets that gave India a brief hope of a comeback.

Chase Anchored by Short and Connolly

Australia's run chase was initially anchored by Matthew Short. He scored a solid 74 runs off 78 balls, setting a strong foundation. After his dismissal, the responsibility fell on 22-year-old Cooper Connolly. He partnered effectively with Mitchell Owen, putting together a brisk 59-run stand. This partnership seemed to put the result beyond doubt.

However, the dismissal of Owen in the 43rd over triggered a minor collapse. India's bowlers, Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj, struck in quick succession in the 45th and 46th overs. This reduced Australia from a comfortable position to needing 19 runs with fewer wickets in hand. Despite the late pressure, Connolly remained composed. He finished unbeaten on 61 off 53 balls, steering his team to victory and sealing the series 2-0.

India's Innings Propped Up by Veterans

Earlier, India posted a total of 264 for 9 after batting first. The innings saw a welcome return to form for veteran opener Rohit Sharma. Playing only his second international innings in over seven months, Sharma adopted a patient approach. He ground out a valuable 73 runs from 97 balls. This was a departure from his more aggressive style in recent years.

He shared a vital 118-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer, who contributed 61 runs off 77 balls. Their efforts stabilized the innings after an early setback. However, India couldn't fully capitalize in the final overs, ending with a score that proved just short against Australia's determined chase.

  • Australia defeated India by two wickets in the second ODI to win the three-match series 2-0.
  • Cooper Connolly (61*) and Matthew Short (74) were the key performers for Australia in the successful chase of 265.
  • India experienced a late surge, taking wickets in the 45th and 46th overs, but couldn't prevent the Australian win.
  • Rohit Sharma (73) and Shreyas Iyer (61) were the main contributors for India, putting on a 118-run partnership.
