New Delhi, July 20: The Congress party has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to directly address several pressing national and international issues during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. These include the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, U.S. President Donald Trump's claims about a ceasefire, and concerns over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, particularly in Bihar.
Congress General Secretary in charge of Communications, Jairam Ramesh, shared the party’s demands in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday. He stated that Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, raised these concerns during an all-party meeting convened ahead of the session.
“In the all-party meeting convened by the Modi government today, my colleague Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader of the INC in the Lok Sabha, voiced our party's demands for urgent parliamentary discussion,” Ramesh wrote.
The Congress party outlined the following key issues for debate:
Security and foreign affairs: The recent terror attack in Pahalgam and statements by officials including the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), and the Deputy Chief of Army Staff, as well as comments made by former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a ceasefire.
Electoral integrity: The ongoing SIR of electoral rolls, which Congress claims may result in mass voter disenfranchisement in Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, and other states. The party also criticized the broader actions of the Election Commission, alleging they pose a threat to democratic processes.
Foreign policy challenges: Concerns over India’s handling of China, failures in regional diplomacy, and what the party termed as “moral cowardice” on the issue of Palestine.
Internal political issues: The demand for the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, the granting of Sixth Schedule status to Ladakh, and a response to the ongoing crisis in Manipur, which Congress noted still awaits attention from the Prime Minister.
