New Delhi/ Bhubaneswar, February 3: During the discussion following the President's Address, BJD Member of Parliament Sasmit Patra on Tuesday urged the central government to take immediate action in strengthening the enforcement of laws to protect vulnerable sections of society in light of the escalating incidents of violence across Odisha and the rest of the country.

Speaking on the matter in the Rajya Sabha, Patra highlighted a disturbing national trend—the steady rise in violent crimes, gender-based offenses, and targeted attacks on marginalized communities. He stressed that these issues are severely undermining public safety and eroding the constitutional guarantees meant to protect citizens.

Although policing is primarily a state responsibility, Patra emphasized that the magnitude, scale, and persistence of these crimes have direct implications for fundamental rights, internal security, and the effective implementation of central laws and schemes. He argued that this ongoing crisis requires the urgent intervention and attention of the central government.
