Bhubaneswar, Feb 6: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has given the green light to a proposal aimed at extending the coverage of the Madhu Babu Pension Yojana (MBPY), a social security scheme by the Odisha government, to an additional 4 lakh beneficiaries.

This decision increases the total number of beneficiaries under MBPY from 32.75 lakh to 36.75 lakh. The expansion of coverage will require an allocation of Rs 190.20 crore from the government's coffers.

Last August, the Chief Minister had already sanctioned the inclusion of 4.13 lakh beneficiaries under the scheme. The inputs provided by the public, expressing their desire to be included in MBPY, were gathered during the visit of VK Pandian, the chairman of the 5T initiative, to various regions within the state.

The Madhu Babu Pension Yojana caters to various vulnerable groups, including senior citizens, widows, differently abled individuals, unmarried women, AIDS and leprosy patients, divorced women, transgenders, and children orphaned by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Beneficiaries up to the age of 79 are entitled to a monthly pension of Rs 500, while those aged 80 and above receive Rs 700 per month.
