New Delhi, December 10 : President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday attended the Human Rights Day celebrations organized by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in New Delhi, where she emphasized that “human rights must be guaranteed for all, especially for the person at the last mile, in line with the philosophy of Antyodaya.”

The President highlighted that every citizen should actively contribute to the nation’s development journey, with the goal of achieving a Viksit Bharat by 2047.

Reflecting on the significance of the day, President Murmu noted, "Seventy-seven years ago, the world united to affirm a simple yet revolutionary truth: every human being is born free and equal in dignity and rights." She underscored India’s pivotal role in shaping the global human rights framework, adding, “Our freedom fighters envisioned a world based on human dignity, equality, and justice.”

The President emphasized that human rights are deeply embedded in the vision of the Indian Constitution, stating, “Human rights promote social democracy. They ensure the right to live without fear, to learn without barriers, to work without exploitation, and to age with dignity.”

In her address, President Murmu also stressed that human rights cannot be separated from development. She reiterated India’s commitment to the enduring principle: “There is no peace without justice, and there is no justice without peace.”

The President praised the NHRC, State Commissions, the judiciary, and civil society for their role as “vigilant guardians” of the Constitution’s conscience. She acknowledged the NHRC's significant contributions, including its proactive actions on issues affecting marginalized groups such as SC/ST communities, women, children, and the human rights of prison inmates.

She also highlighted the NHRC's important work on women's safety, commending the Commission’s recent conference on this issue.

President Murmu reflected on the government’s transformative shift over the past decade, noting a move “from entitlement to empowerment and from charity to rights.” She emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring essential services like clean water, healthcare, and sanitation reach all citizens to preserve their dignity. Additionally, she pointed to the implementation of the four Labour Codes as a significant reform aimed at creating a future-ready workforce.
