Bhubaneswar, July 3: Thousands of schools which were either closed or merged with nearby high schools during the previous BJD government in Odisha will be reopened.
A number of schools which were either permanently closed or merged with nearby institutions will be reopened based on necessity and official reports on tyhe ground reality, School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond said on Tuesday.
“A number of primary schools were either closed or merged in tribal and remote areas based on faulty reports overlooking the demand of locals. The department secretary has already been asked to submit a report on reopening of such schools on the basis of necessity and considering the demand of people,” the minister said during media interaction.
The outgoing BJD government had merged 7,772 schools in the state citing low enrolment despite public outrage and protest. Schools having less than 20 students were either closed or merged with nearby schools.
