Cuttack, Oct 4: At least six people, including Cuttack DCP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo, were injured in a violent clash between two groups during the immersion procession of Goddess Durga at Haathi Pokhari, near Dargah Bazaar, late Friday night.
The incident unfolded when the medha (idol) of the Jhanjirimangala Bhagabat Puja Committee was passing through Haathi Pokhari. A dispute over a song triggered a heated argument, which soon escalated into a violent confrontation. Members from both groups reportedly threw stones and glass bottles at each other, causing widespread chaos.
As the confrontation intensified, the Jhanjirimangala medha was halted. Meanwhile, the Rausapatna medha continued its journey. However, when it reached Dargah Bazaar, a group of local youths allegedly attacked some of the procession participants, further fueling the violence.
In total, six people were injured, including DCP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo. One individual is reported to be in critical condition. Several parked motorcycles were also damaged, and roadside stalls were vandalized during the unrest.
As tensions escalated, the Rausapatna medha was stopped, leading to protests from local residents. Police had to use a lathi charge to disperse the crowd and restore order.
By early Saturday morning, the situation was under control, and the immersion procession resumed peacefully, accompanied by heavy security measures.
