Bhubaneswar, Dec 13: In a significant step towards strengthening coastal security and improving emergency response capabilities, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated the Odisha Watermanship and Lifeguard Institute (OSWALI) at Ramchandi near Konark, Puri district. The initiative aims to bolster the state's capacity in water safety and disaster management.

On the occasion, the Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art scuba complex to enhance advanced underwater rescue training in Odisha. This will help improve the state’s preparedness for aquatic emergencies and strengthen disaster response operations.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Odisha Tourism Department, Odisha Fire & Emergency Services, and the National Institute of Water Sports (NIWS) Goa. The agreement focuses on developing water sports safety standards, professional lifeguard training, and expanding the scope of coastal and adventure tourism in the state.

The event featured an impressive demonstration of watermanship, showcasing rescue techniques and coastal emergency preparedness by Odisha Fire and Emergency Services personnel. The show highlighted the lifesaving skills that will be taught at the new institute.

In his address, Chief Minister Mohan Majhi emphasized that OSWALI will serve as a national and international center for water safety, lifeguard training, and coastal resilience. The institute will enhance Odisha’s ability to respond to natural disasters and climate change threats, contributing significantly to the state’s disaster management capabilities.

The Chief Minister also highlighted Odisha’s proven success in managing major cyclones, stating that the government is committed to strengthening the fire service and improving emergency response systems. The training center, which has been established at a cost of Rs 12 crore, will cater to fire brigades, paramilitary forces, NDRF, police, security guards, and volunteers involved in rescue work.

Additionally, the Tourism Department will utilize the facility to train lifeguards for tourist safety and provide resources for water sports, further promoting Odisha as a hub for adventure tourism.

The CM urged the Odisha Police Housing Corporation to expedite the completion of this project and reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the state’s emergency response infrastructure.
