Puri, Ap 23: The construction of the ceremonial Rath for the upcoming festival requires nearly 75 types of iron materials. Around four tons of iron will be used to prepare essential components like Kanta, Bala, and Pandari for the Rath.
On Wednesday, artisans and temple assistants began preparing the Kanta at the Dolavedi, carefully following traditional rituals. The Kanta will be fitted into the wheels of the Rath, with all iron materials provided under the guidance of Vishwakarma.
At the Rath workshop, craftsmen are shaping the Tumb in its required form. The construction work is being carried out in coordination with the temporary wooden shelters (Shalas) at the site.
For the preparations, four temporary Shalas were constructed using clay and bricks at the Dolavedi. In line with customary practice, three independent Shalas will house the three Raths, ensuring proper rituals and offerings of Mahaprasad and fruits to honor the deities.
Each wheel will accommodate 32 spokes, with the smallest standing at 2.5 inches and the largest, the Jangha spokes, measuring 4.5 feet in height, placed on the Rath’s upper structure, known as the Potal. Craftsmen, guided by senior assistants, maintain precision throughout the process, often working barefoot to adhere to tradition.
By evening, six Tumbs for the three chariots are expected to be completed. Skilled artisans continue to cut, shape, and measure the wood with meticulous attention, ensuring that every piece fits perfectly. The wheel’s central hub will then be assembled, marking a crucial stage in the Rath construction.
The entire process is carried out with devotion, precision, and strict adherence to rituals, highlighting the importance of divine blessing in every step of the Rath preparations.
