Dutchman returns to lead squad towards World Cup qualification

Bhubaneswar: In a significant move to revitalise the national squad, Hockey India has officially reappointed Sjoerd Marijne as the chief coach of the Indian women’s hockey team. This marks the Dutchman’s third stint with the team, famously having guided them to a historic fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics.

Marijne will join the national camp on January 14, stepping in at a critical juncture. The team is currently facing severe challenges, resembling the disjointed unit he first encountered in 2017. Following a string of poor performances—including failure to qualify for the Paris Olympics and relegation from the FIH Pro League—the squad is in desperate need of a turnaround.

Senior Players Advocated for Return

This appointment comes after Harendra Singh resigned in December, officially citing personal reasons. However, reports suggest his exit followed player complaints to the sports ministry regarding behaviour and declining results. Hockey India officials revealed that senior players specifically recommended bringing Sjoerd Marijne back to navigate the team out of its current crisis.

His immediate focus will be the World Cup qualifier tournament, scheduled to take place in Hyderabad from March 8 to 14.

Support Staff and Future Vision

Expressing his enthusiasm, Marijne stated he is returning with "fresh energy" after 4.5 years to help the players reach their full potential. He is not returning alone; scientific advisor Wayne Lombard, credited with the superior fitness levels seen in Tokyo, is also rejoining the setup.

Additionally, the support staff will be bolstered by analytical coach Matias Vila, a former Argentine midfielder and Olympian. They will be supported by Rodet and Ciara Yila. With this experienced team in place, fans are hopeful that Sjoerd Marijne can once again work his magic and secure a spot for India in this year's World Cup.
